While double eyelid surgery in the young to create or enhance a crease has become one of the most popular cosmetic operations in the world, almost no attention has been devoted to improving the appearance of the aging Asian upper eyelid.
Application of traditional blepharoplasty techniques developed on and for the Occidental population may yield results that are both unexpected and undesirable. Why? Because these 'standard' cosmetic procedures fail to address a different set of anatomical changes responsible for early aging in the eyelids of many middle-aged Asian people. Instead of helping to rejuvenate, such surgery may sometimes alter the appearance in a way that seems unnatural or even make the face look older.
During the past two years, Dr. Meronk has worked at conceptualizing and developing a surgical solution. Radically different from traditional Western blepharoplasty described long ago, this innovative technique addresses the distinctive set of changes that until now have either gone unrecognized by many surgeons or, if recognized, were felt to be untreatable. While still under study, it offers help to many people who until now could not be improved.
