Factors to Consider Before Traveling for Surgery

As most eyelid surgery can be safely performed on an out-patient basis, many of our patients travel long distances for their care. Before making a decision to undergo an operation away from the comfort of familiar surroundings, be sure to consider the following:

We recommend that you travel with a companion. If, however, you choose to travel alone, your regular "support system" will be unavailable. You should be well-prepared for your stay and ready to be self-sufficient.

You will need to register at the hotel of your choice before reporting to our office on the morning of surgery. We strongly recommend checking into your room the night before so that you are well rested and relaxed. The majority of our patients select one of the two Marriott hotels located within a mile of our office.

We cannot provide for your transportation. Unless you are traveling with another adult, you should select a hotel that provides its guests with shuttle-van service to and from our office (both Marriott hotels do). For security reasons, returning to your hotel by regular taxi after surgery is not recommended. If you have access to a car, do not try to drive on the day of surgery.

Following your out-patient surgery, you may feel drowsy for much of the day. Some patients may experience a short period of amnesia even after leaving our office. Once you return to your hotel, you should remain in your room for the rest of the day and stay in bed as much as possible. Any food or supplies you may need should be ready and waiting (we will provide postoperative supplies and medications).

We are unable to provide off-site nursing care. While postoperative care is generally simple, you should arrange for a friend or family member to telephone you on the afternoon and/or evening of your treatment. Such personal contact can be both comforting and helpful. If you need advice from our office, we are always available by either phone or pager.

Before the day of surgery, you should familiarize yourself with all of the material on our web site regarding your specific operation and recovery as well as all material provided in your preoperative packet from our office.

Hotel recommendations on our web site are provided for your convenience. All establishments are non-medical commercial businesses unaffiliated with our office and not qualified to offer postoperative advice or care. Complimentary shuttle service is offered as a standard guest amenity and should not be viewed as a medical transport service.

Most patients tell us that traveling for surgery was well worth the added effort. If, however, you feel uncomfortable about the inconveniences associated with traveling, we recommend that you seek care from a practitioner located closer to home.
