Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery 

alloplastic - not of human origin; synthetic
aponeurosis - thin sheath connecting muscle to other tissue; a tendon
arcus marginalis - an area of thickening just below the the point where the orbital septum fuses with the rim of bone beneath the lower eyelid
asymmetry - one side unmatched to the other; imbalance
atrophy - thinning or loss of substance within a tissue layer
autologous - dervied from the same body


blepharoplasty - surgery to improve the appearance and/or function of the eyelids
blepharoptosis - droopy upper eyelid; also known as "ptosis"
Boards - official groups comprising the American Board of Medical Specialties
Board-certified - has met requirements of any of the official ABMS Boards
body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) - an exaggerated or unrealistic fixation on normal or slightly abnormal anatomic features
brow lift - operation to correct brow ptosis; same as 'forehead lift'
browpexy - a simplified form of brow reinforcement
browplasty - thinning of the fat pad underneath the brow
brow ptosis - droopiness of the eyebrow
bulbar - referring to the eyeball


canthus - tissues just beyond the corners where the upper and lower eyelids join
canthal tendons - tendons supporting the eyelid to the bone of the socket
canthopexy - surgery to reinforce the lateral canthal tendon
canthoplasty - surgery to reposition the lateral canthal tendon
chemical peel - application of various chemicals to improve skin texture
chemodenervation - injection of a toxin to paralyze muscle
chemosis - fluid between the conjunctiva and sclera
commissure - the point at which the upper and lower eyelids join
congenital - inborn; present at birth or shortly thereafter
conjunctiva - transparent tissue lining the white of the eye and back of the lid
cornea - transparent front layer of the eyeball
coronal - surgical incision made ear-to-ear through the scalp during forehead lift
corrugator muscle - muscle just above the eyebrows that causes frown lines
cosmetic surgery - surgery undertaken with the intent of improving appearance
crease - indentation extending across the upper eyelid
cutaneous - pertaining to the skin surface of the eyelid

dermatochalasis - excess eyelid skin
dermal fat - tissue consisting of dermis with attached subcutaneous fat
dermis - second layer of the skin, just below the epidermis
doll's eye deformity - descriptive term to denote extreme upper hollowness
double eyelid surgery - blepharoplasty on the Asian eyelid to refine the crease


ectropion - eyelid turned out from the surface of the eyeball
edema - tissue fluid causing swelling
endoscope - small tubular microscope allowing less invasive surgery
epicanthal fold - small web-like fold of tissue at the inner junction of the eyelids
epicanthoplasty - surgery to diminish the epicanthal fold
epidermis - outermost layer of the skin
exposure keratitis - drying of the cornea caused by poor eyelid closure
extraocular muscles - muscles that move the eyeball
eyelid laxity - stretchy eyelid due to loose tendon support system
eyelid lift - a non-preferred lay term for blepharoplasty


fascia - strong sheath encasing muscle or supporting fat
fascia-fat - fat tissue rich in supporting fascia; firmer than 'pearl fat'
fat grafting - transfer of intact particles of fat tissue rather than fat cells (much like a skin graft); often misused to indicate 'fat transfer'
fat injection - needle injection of fat cells obtained by liposuction
fat repositioning - moving eyelid fat without cutting off its blood supply
fat transfer - a generic term for fat surgery
fat transplantation - generally, the same as fat injection
fibrous - collagen accumulation in scarring
filler - any material used to plump up a depression
follicles - roots of the hair
forehead lift - operation to correct forehead/brow ptosis and forehead wrinkling
forehead ptosis - sagging or droop of the forehead and brow
frontalis muscle - muscle of the forehead that elevates the eyebrows
functional surgery - surgery undertaken with the primary intent of improving abnormal function


glabella - area between the eyebrows
graft - tissue moved from one site on the body to another

homologous - derived from the same species but not the same body
hypertrophic - thickened and/or overactive


incisional - surgery using a cut extending across and into the eyelid
inferior oblique muscle - eyeball muscle that courses through the orbital fat behind the lower eyelid


lacrimal gland - tear gland that produces tears to moisten eye surface
lagophthalmos - inability of the eyelids to close fully
laser blepharoplasty - eyelid surgery incorporating laser as the cutting/coagulation tool
laser resurfacing (laser peel) - use of a laser to soften skin wrinkles
lash ptosis - upper eyelid lashes drooping over the cornea
lateral canthus - junction of upper and lower lids on the side towards the temple
levator muscle - the main elevator (opening) muscle for the upper eyelid
levator aponeurosis - tendon of the levator muscle
limbus - circular junction between the cornea and the sclera


malar bag - an area of swelling over the bone of the outer upper cheek
malar fat pad - prominent area of cheek fat starting below the eyelid and extending over much of the upper cheek
maxillary hypoplasia - inadequate development of bone along the orbital rim separating the eyelid and cheek
medial canthus - junction of upper and lower lids on side towards the nose
midface - tissues extending from the lower eyelid to the upper lip; cheek
milia - white bumps that often occur in healing skin; usually temporary
Müller's muscle - secondary (minor) elevating muscle of upper eyelid


nasal - located towards the nose side of the eyelids (medial)
nasojugal fold - fold from inner lid corner downward onto the cheek (tear trough)
nasolabial fold - fold extending from corner of nostril to the corner of the mouth
nonincisional - surgery without making a cut; a term frequently misused

oculoplastic surgery - plastic surgery on the eyelids and surrounding structures
ophthalmic plastic surgeon - specialist in surgery of the eyelids
ophthalmologist - medical doctor specialized in treating eye disease
orbicularis oculi muscle - eyelid muscle that closes the eye
orbit - space within the socket of bone surrounding the eyeball
orbital fat - fat that cushions the eyeball in the socket and may bulge forward to make the eyelids look puffy
orbital fat grafting - placement of intact particles of fat tissue into the socket to improve hollowness
orbital flat tire - syndrome caused by shortage of fat within the socket
orbital rim - edge of the orbital bone surrounding the eye
orbital rim hollow - upper cheek depression just below the eyelid
orbital septum - structural middle eyelid layer that holds back the orbital fat


palpebral - referring to the eyelid
palpebral fissure - opening between the eyelids
pearl fat - particles of intact fat tissue the size of a small pearl
periosteum - a thin but strong tissue layer lining the surface of bone
pinch blepharoplasty - a method for removing skin on the lower eyelid without disturbing underlying tissues
plastic surgery - surgery to restore function or improve appearance
plastic surgeon - specialist in plastic surgery of the entire body
procerus muscle - muscle that lowers the brow
proptosis - a bulging eye
ptosis - droopiness


resurfacing - treating the skin to improve wrinkles, texture, and color
retraction - an abnormal pulling down of the lower lid or pulling up of the upper lid
retrobulbar - behind the eyeball
revisional - correcting complications from prior surgery
rhytids - wrinkles
ROOF - retro-orbicularis oculi fat; thick fat pad just under and below the eyebrow

sclera - white of the eye; covered by conjunctiva ; joins with the cornea
scleral show - excessive exposure of the sclera due to eyelid retraction
secondary - a second eyelid surgery years after a previously successful blepharoplasty; not performed to correct problems
septal confluence hollow - eyelid depression due to inadequate orbital fat
single eyelid - an upper eyelid without a natural crease
skeletonization - exposure of the orbital rim due to droop of the cheek
skin pinch - method for excision of only skin from the lower eyelid
socket - cavity of bone in the skull surrounding the eye
SOOF - sub-orbicularis oculi fat; thick fat pad at top of cheek just below the closing muscle of the lower lid
spacer - material inserted to lengthen structure or prevent scarring
sub-brow fat pad - same as ROOF
subconjunctival - space below the conjunctiva but above the sclera
subcutaneous fat - normal fat layer of the skin located below the dermis; essentially absent in the thin skin of the eyelids
syndrome - constellation of findings related to a single cause


tarsus (tarsal plate) - cartilage-like stiffening layer extending across the eyelid
TCA - trichloroacetic acid; a common chemical peeling agent
tear trough - the groove or depression that begins between the side of the nose and the lower eyelid and extends along or just below the orbital rim of bone below the eye. Not an abnormal feature unless overly deep. Similar to nasojugal fold.
tear trough deformity - an overly deep tear trough
temporal - located towards the temple side of the eyelids (lateral)
tissue sparing - methods designed to preserve lid structure during blepharoplasty
transconjunctival - surgical entry into the orbital fat through an incision placed on the inside surface of the lid
transcutaneous - surgical entry into the eyelid and orbital fat by going through the skin
